Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ (Ephesians 4:14-15 NIV).
From our previous conversations we notice that James highlights the difficulty we all have in trying to tame the tongue. As one of the smallest members of the body, the tongue is totally uncontrollable by any outside agency and must be brought under control by the individual who owns it. If this does not occur then we get into situations which become damaging to the individual and also to those with whom the individual associates. This is exactly what happened to the people Moses led out of captivity on route to the Promised Land. Those who did not understand the vision for what the Lord had planned or failed to seek God for clarification, complained, moaned and rebelled against Moses and ultimately God.
They did this with their tongues and God punished them so that in the end when they eventually entered the Promised Land forty years later, only two people, Joshua & Caleb, out of an estimated 600, 000 crossed over.
Today we need to speak the truth in love to each other and when we hear it modify our behaviour to get in line with what God is doing. If we fail to do this we will develop the Marasmas syndrome and fail to grow and develop as a man or woman of God. The enemy is cunning and crafty and will try to breach any gap that he sees in the walls to come in and cause confusion. Speaking the truth will flush out the enemy, as those who speak with ‘forked tongues’ will be found out.
Truths are words that align with God’s word, the bible. Speaking the truth in love brings restoration and reconciliation, this is what God requires from us and this is what will cause us to grow.
Truth is Jesus, the word. Lies are from Satan the devil. Avoid the dangers of lying and embrace the love of and for the truth.
